Impunity is in danger under Dampare – Kofi Abotsi

IGP Dr George Akuffo Dampare

Dean of the Law School at the University of Professional Studies Accra (UPSA), Professor Kofi Abotsi, has noted that impunity is in danger under the current Inspector General of Police (IGP) COP Dr George Akuffo Dampare.

Since Mr Dampare became the IGP, steps have been taken to deal with crimes other forms of violations of the law.

For instance, under his watch and for the first time, a pastor who gave a death prophecy was arrested and lawfully kept in Police custody for days. The pastor, Jesus Ahuofe prophesied that popular dancehall artist Shatta Wale was going to be shot.

Shatta Wale himself was also arrested for lying that he was shot, a claim that created fear and panic.

In a tweet, Prof Abotsi said “IGP Dampare may be new in his seat but he has shifted something in the gears of policing dormant for decades.

“When the police merely acts because it is activated by third persons, it ceases to champion the rule of law. Under Dampare impunity is in danger.”

He was sworn into office by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Friday October 8 at the seat of government, the Jubilee House.

President Akufo-Addo saidafter swearing him in that “He has demonstrated he will be an effective leader of the Police.”

“We have a worthy successor to Mr Oppong-Buanoh (the immediate past IGP) and the others who have gone before him,” he added.

“Government will do its best to assist you,” he stressed.

COP Dampare was appointed as Acting IGP on August 1.
