I would have withdrawn if not the love i have for Assin North – Gyakye Quayson

Member of Parliament for Assin North in the Central region, James Gyakye Quayson has reflected on the struggle he has gone through in the bid to serve his people as a lawmaker.

He was faced with an injunction challenging his eligibility to hold office as an MP for allegedly holding a dual citizenship of Canada and Ghana.

Eventually, the Supreme Court on May 17, 2023 described as unconstitutional his election and declared the Assin north seat vacant.

It was carried in a unanimous decision by a seven-member panel of the Supreme Court which ordered Parliament to expunge Gyakye Quayson’s name as MP.

Mr. Gyakye Quayson who was positive to reclaim the seat contested the by-election and won the seat unquestionably regardless of the predicament.

Speaking in an interview with Onua news at the Kotoka International Airport, the Assin North lawmaker maintained, he withstood the agony because of the love he has for his people and the fact that he wanted to serve.

He had gone to the airport to join jubilant National Democratic Congress MP’s, Chiefs and party faithful to welcome Jomoro MP, Dorcas Affo-Toffey, who was returning from the States after undergoing a medical treatment due to her grisly accident in August.

“I came back to help build the country. Take my case for instance, if not for the love I have for Assin North like per what I went through I would have withdrawn”.

“But I could not betray the people because of the love I have for them and the party,” he stressed.

He pledged to continue serving his people yet prayed Ghanaians would vote massively for the NDC in the upcoming December 7 general elections to enable the party form the next government to reset the country.
