A former General Secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyepong has disclosed that he was not in favour of the Agenda 111 project.

The civil engineer explained that he could not fathom why government decided to build that number of hospitals at the same time, when the economy was not in the best of shapes.

The Agenda 111 initiative, inaugurated by President Akufo-Addo on August 17, 2021, aims to construct a total of 111 district hospitals throughout the country to improve access to healthcare.

The objective of the project is to ensure that Ghanaians in every district and region in the country have access to quality healthcare services.

“The whole attempt to have agenda 111, I was not in favour of attempting to build a hundred and eleven hospitals at the same time, especially when we are going through economic turmoil,” he said in an interview with Keminni Amanor on TV3’s Hot Issues on January 7.

He was of the opinion that the government is stretching itself too thin, which results in its impact on the governance of the country not being felt by the general populace.

Mr Agyepong noted however, that, many of them (Agenda 111 hospitals) are nearing completion and will contribute towards improving healthcare delivery as envisioned by the government.

“I think about thirty or so are nearing completion around the country. I don’t have the figures directly, but I can tell you there are a lot of them nearing completion. So, on that balance sheet, it looks good with the provision of infrastructure,” he said.
