Retired Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Dr. Benjamin Agordzo, has revealed he slept well on his first night of detention at the Bureau of National Investigation (BNI), now the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), due to his conviction that the state has no case against him.

Dr. Benjamin Agordzo was detained for the offence of abetment of high treason with nine others in 2019.

After five years of court processes, the Accra High Court ruling on Wednesday, January 24, acquitted Dr. Agordzo alongside Colonel Gameli and another junior military officer, Corporal Seidu Abubakar. Six of the accused persons were found guilty.

Speaking on Hot Issues on TV3, the retired senior police officer said, “When I was sent to the BNI custody the first night let me say that I slept like a baby. I had a good conscience. I knew I had not done anything untoward. I was only wondering why these people were doing what they were doing to me. I did not have any issues, my conscience was very clear and so I slept very well.”

The accused persons

The first person to be charged was the late Dr. Frederick Yao Mac Palm, who was considered to be the mastermind. The conviction of Donya Kafui, the second accused, was for high treason and conspiracy to commit high treason. Similar to the first two accused, Bright Allan Debrah Ofosu was found guilty of both high treason and conspiracy to commit high treason.

Warrant Officer Class Two Esther Saan Dekuwine, the only female amongst the accused, was found guilty of conspiracy to commit high treason but not guilty of high treason.

On the other hand, Cpl Seidu Abubakar, the seventh accused, was acquitted of both conspiracy to commit high treason and high treason. Lance Corporal Ali Solomon, the eighth accused, was also found guilty of conspiracy but not guilty of high treason.

The accused persons were charged with conspiracy to commit high treason, abetment to high treason, and high treason. The charges follow an alleged scheme to destabilise the country.

Meanwhile, the retired senior police officer has hinted at a possible legal action for the state to compensate him following his acquittal by the court.
