Plans are underway by the government to construct an airstrip at Ataabadze in the Central Region, Aviation Minister Ms Cecilia Abena Dapaah has revealed. At a working visit to the proposed site with officials of the Ministry and the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, she expressed concern about encroachment on the 3,000-acre land for the project located in the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem (KEEA) Municipality Encroachers have started developing portions of the land, something the Minister observed could compromise the project if adequate measures are not adopted to halt the rate of encroachment. Although she did not say when work is likely to begin, Ms Dapaah said upon completion the airstrip would accommodate light aircraft and boost domestic flights She reiterated that the Akufo-Addo-led government attaches great importance to the development of the nation’s aviation sector. Ms Dapaah noted that the current administration’s premium on the aviation sector was to open the country to international community and promote economic and tourism potentials of the Central Region. The Region boasts of several tourism attraction including the Kakum National Park, castles and forts. “The project is dear to the heart of NPP government and that efforts are been made to ensure the execution of the project” she said She underscored the need for the Municipal Chief Executive for KEEA, Nana Appiah Korang to work towards properly securing the land from encroachers to safeguard the land.
