Government’s negotiation team has pulled out of ongoing engagements with leadership of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) to secure codified service conditions for the Association’s members due to an extension of their strike action, TV3 has gathered.
The Association last Friday decided at an extraordinary General Assembly meeting to extend withdrawal of emergency and out-patient services for two more weeks due to failure to reach an agreement with government.
But speaking on Accra-based Joy FM on Monday, August 17, Minister of Employment and Labour Relations Haruna Iddrisu insisted that government cannot negotiate with the doctors while they are on strike.
It is against the Labour Act for parties to negotiate while one is on strike, he stated.
The GMA had requested proper service conditions for members serving in the public sector, threatening to resign if government fails to provide these.
A 64-page draft conditions of service is said to have been tabled for further negotiations.
