The Government of Ghana has formed a special team that will be solely responsible for emergency repair of roads destroyed by floods in the country.
This was announced by the Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako-Attah on Monday June 20 while addressing the press at Jukwa in the Central Region in relation to the the collapse of the bridge in the area due to the flood.
He stated that the team will have twenty four hours, depending on the degree of damage, to repair the roads.
He said “we are experiencing an ongoing torrential rainfall and we are having a number of these challenge all over the country. The government, through the Ministry of Roads and Highways, has put together a special, quick response team to deal with these type of situations.
“I want to assure the nation and the people of the Central Region for that matter the people of this area that as much as we don’t expect or we don’t pray for such disasters, once the rainfall continues we are likely to experience the washouts on our roads because of the torrential rains.
“The people of this area could be rest assured that there is a strong formidable programme on the ground and wherever it happens unfortunately though, we shall move in to reinstate the road, depending upon the degree and the extent of the problem. We have tasked ourselves to reinstate any washout road within 24 hours.”
Meanwhile, the Cape Coast-Twifo Praso road which was closed following the collapse of the bridge has been reopened to traffic.
The road was re-oponed on Monday June 20.
On Sunday June 19, the Ministry of Roads and Highways, acting through the Ghana Highway Authority, announced that the Cape Coast – Twifo Praso Road was inaccessible.
The recent downpour in parts of the region resulted in a bridge washout that led to a cut-off at Jukwa.
The Ghana Highway Authority said it took all necessary steps to ensure that the road was reinstated as soon as practicable.
Motorists travelling between Cape Coast and Twifo Praso were advised to use the Cape Coast – Yamoransa(N1)Assin Fosu,Twifo Praso(N8) Road.
