GBA voting breakdown: 47 for CJ revocation, low turnout cited

The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) Public Relations Officer, Saviour Kudze, has revealed the voting pattern of the association’s members regarding the resolutions submitted to President John Dramani Mahama concerning the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

In an interview with JoyNews, Kudze disclosed that 47 members voted in favor of the resolutions, while 5 members voted against them. He also noted that a significant number of members abstained from voting.

Kudze attributed the relatively low participation in the voting to poor attendance at the GBA’s Mid-Year conference.

Well, I think a little over 200 people registered for the conference but I must admit, after the time that the resolutions were being passed, not all the people were available because it started raining and some had to go, so not many people were available. I think it should be more than 50 because I did the counting. Those who were for the resolution were about 47, I recall, and about 5 were against, and a good number abstained,” he explained.

The GBA’s resolution called on President Mahama to revoke the suspension of Chief Justice Torkornoo. This resolution was passed at the GBA’s Mid-Year conference held at the Labadi Beach Hotel in Accra on April 26, 2025.

Reports indicate that the GBA’s stance stems from members’ dissatisfaction with the suspension of the Chief Justice after reviewing details of the three petitions for her removal.

They also expressed displeasure with the determination of a prima facie case in the petitions filed for Justice Torkornoo’s removal by President Mahama and the Council of State.
