Fishing activities suspended at Dixcove after one died in several boat capsize

File: Dixcove[/caption] Several fishing boats at Dixcove, a fishing community in the Ahanta West District of the Western Region, have capsized, leading to the death of one person and destruction of three boats. The situation, according to the fisherfolks, has been caused by the abandonment of a sea defence. Nana Badu, a seasoned fisherman in the area said to be in his fifties, was returning from a fishing expedition when his boat capsized causing him to lose his life. Fishing activities have consequently been suspended in the area until further notice, the Chief Fisherman for Dixcove, Nana Essel, told Takoradi-based Connect FM He said the abandoned sea defence has caused high tides in area, which caused several boats to capsize Thursday at 9:00pm. Nana Essel said they have resolved to suspend fishing activities until the sea tide calms down. The Dixcove Sea defence wall, started by the NDC government has stalled since the Akufo-Addo-led government took over. Member of Parliament for Bodi, Samson Ahi, at one time accused government of abandoning the project and other sea defence projects in the Western Region by refusing to pay the contractors. His claim was however rebuffed by the Works and Housing Minister, Samuel Atta AKyea who though admited payments had delayed, assured that some monies had been made available to the contractors to resume work.
