Accra: Prudential Life, United Way Ghana implement climate action project to address sanitation and hygiene in Chorkor

Prudential Life Insurance Ghana, in collaboration with United Way Ghana, has donated over $100,000 worth of resources to support community development initiatives in Chorkor Community, specifically in areas of sanitation, health and hygiene.

The colorful event, dubbed the Pru Climate Action Project, aims to enhance the quality of life for residents in and around Chorkor community by addressing water, sanitation, and hygiene concerns.

Community members, traditional authorities, and management from Prudential Life Ghana and United Way gathered at the Chemunaa Cluster of Schools in Chorkor for the event.

The launch of the Pru Climate Action Project provided an opportunity for organizers to share the project’s vision, engage with relevant stakeholders, and foster collaboration among community members, government representatives, and other partners.

United Way Ghana also announced that the project includes a year-long advocacy campaign focused on behavioral change in waste management, open defecation, and recycling.

Donated items included handwashing stations, a tricycle for waste recycling, cleaning materials, dustbins, wheelbarrows, and shovels.

Prudential Life Insurance Ghana, alongside Board Members of the United Way Ghana, Community Leaders and other partners also broke ground for the construction of a 20-seater toilet facility and borehole for the Chemunaa Cluster of Schools. Currently, pupils in the school have to resort to using public restrooms outside the school.

In her address, an ex-officio member of the United Way governing board, Janet Butler also announced the construction of 100 bio-digestive toilets for homes within Chorkor. This initiative aims to reduce open defecation and improve overall sanitary conditions.

Additionally, 300 community members in Chorkor will be enrolled in the National Health Insurance Scheme free of charge, she added.

Speaking to the media after the donation, Prudential Life CEO, Mrs. Jane Mingle explained the reasons behind Prudential Life’s partnership with United Way to embark on the Climate Action Project in Chorkor.

“Pru Life is a partner of Prudential PLC, and we have an investment wing that supports different countries affected by climate change-related issues. We focus on communities that are struggling, and promoting health and well-being.

“If we look at Chorkor, it is one community that suffers significantly from cholera and other sanitation issues.

“So we decided to come here to support them—not just by donating items but by building sustainable initiatives that will bring long-term positive change to the community.”

Jane Mingle further explained how Prudential Life and United Way intend to ensure the project is effective and sustainable, adding that there is a dedicated team at Prudential Life Ghana responsible for monitoring and ensuring the donated items are put to good use.

“We take sustainability very seriously. We have a team that drives sustainability, and we will have monthly reporting between us and United Way to ensure that the structures and processes put in place are being properly implemented. We will conduct follow-up visits to ensure that, beyond the project launch, these donated items continue to serve their intended purpose.”

Board Member for United Way Ghana, Ms. Janet Butler, also spoke to the media, emphasizing that support programs addressing water, sanitation, and hygiene concerns are crucial. She reiterated that health, education, and economic development remain key priorities for United Way Ghana.

She further assured United Way’s commitment to supporting social intervention programs like these to bring relief to underprivileged communities.

“United Way Ghana is committed to health, education, and economic empowerment because we believe these are the building blocks of a better life, no matter who you are or where you come from. We identify communities that could benefit from our interventions.

“We go where our donors want to go, so it’s a collaborative decision between what we at United Way Ghana recognize as communities in need and where our donors would like to provide support.”

She also highlighted the importance of WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) initiatives, stating that they are instrumental across all sectors of development.
