An international economist, Dr Julius Kwaku Kattah, has told the government to empower locals to own means of production.
According to him, this will ensure that more Ghanaians get jobs to do and also strengthen the local currency.
Speaking during a pre-budget discussion on TV3 on Wednesday ahead of the budget presentation by the Finance Minister, Dr Kattah who called for the creation of more factories said “These factories should be owned by Ghanaians.
“Ghanaians must be encouraged. One company producing oil can produce about 8 or 900 metric tons per day but when the benchmark issue came what happened ? It has dropped and that is significant, that is the data, that is the basis upon which we should strengthen our policy.”
He further asked the Finance Minister to project the realities regarding the state of the economy and Ghana’s finances.
“If I take ten people and among the ten, eight is telling me as an economist that things aren’t well, I take it from that to analyze at the micro level to be able to determine that macroeconomic level.
“Things may be rosy as they may see but the economy is otherwise. Don’t forget when we are distorting the figures, I always say that we have to be discipline enough to tell the truth in measuring our figures.
” Statistically, when the president is going out of the country to talk at the international level, I expect prudent, standard measure of figures.”
