Shama DCE commends WAPCo for offering scholarship to students in the area

The District Chief Executive for Shama, Ebenezer Dadzie, has called on institutions to contribute to the development of their host communities operating in the catchment area to emulate the good works of WAPCo and invest in the education and wellbeing of the people.

He was speaking at a ceremony to award educational scholarships to some students at Shama by WAPCo. The West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited, WAPCo has awarded educational scholarships worth 462,000 Ghana cedis to seventy outstanding students from its host communities at Shama and Greater Accra.

Forty are from Shama with the twenty from the Greater Accra Region. Among the 70, 37 are males whilst 33 are females. In addition, WAPCo is currently supporting approximately 120 continuing students in tertiary institutions across the country, with an additional expenditure of around 750,000 cedis this year.

This brings the total investment by the company in the education of students from its seven host communities in Ghana for this academic year to a little over 1,200,000 cedis.

Speaking at the presentation of the scholarships to the recipients at Shama, the District Chief Executive of Shama, Ebenezer Dadzie who commended WAPCO, called other institutions working in the catchment area to emulate the gesture.

“We know the responsibilities of government are many and so cannot do all. So when you get a company to support, we need to appreciate it. Thank you very much, WAPco.”

“I am inviting other companies operating in this jurisdiction to emulate what WAPCo is doing and even do better.”

The Managing Director of WAPco, Michel Burkett in her address spoke about the importance the company puts on the wellbeing and advancement of its host communities stated the scholarship program is evidence of their vision which is a commitment to nurturing the next generation of leaders, thinkers, and changemakers.

“As a company deeply rooted in the communities where we operate, we recognize that our success is intricately linked to the well-being and advancement of those around us. Our mission extends beyond the gas transportation services we provide; it encompasses a broader vision of fostering growth, innovation, and opportunity.

This scholarship program is a testament to that vision – a commitment to nurturing the next generation of leaders, thinkers, and changemakers,” she stated.

Since 2017, 642 students have benefitted from WAPCO scholarships.
