Law Students Demo: Punish unprofessional police – NPP

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called on the top hierarchy of the Ghana Police Service to investigate the circumstances that led to the excessive use of force against demonstrating law students on Monday, October 7. The ruling party says this will help bring to book officers who are found to have acted unprofessionally in order “to forestall future occurrence of this regrettable incident”. Monday’s demonstration by law students seeking reforms to legal education in the country ended abruptly as police fired tear gas, hot water as well as gunshots to disperse them. About 13 of the protesters were arrested though they have all since been released. In a statement issued to condemn the action by the state’s law-enforcement agency, the NPP said the police must not see themselves above the law. “The police must realize that, just like every other Ghanaian, they are also subject to law and ought to give confidence to the populace at all times that, in applying the law, they do so fairly to all manner of persons.” The ruling party urged relevant authorities to consider the demands of the students and grant them audience. “We do empathize deeply with the innocent students who may have suffered any trauma and pray for their speedy recovery.” Source: editors.3news.com|Ghana
