A student victimThe Students Representative Council (SRC) of the University of Cape Coast is calling for the immediate intervention of government to beef up security in and around campus. Students are frequently attacked – sometimes even at gunpoint – where their gadgets and monies are robbed especially during examination period by unscrupulous individuals that students suspect live in communities around the university. President of the SRC, Henry Arthur speaking at the launch of the 55th UCC SRC Week Celebration, appealed for the establishment of police stations in communities in and around the campus. He explained to editors.3news.com that “the university is sandwiched by a number of communities making it very difficult to control robbery and theft cases. Due to poor security lights, some areas have become popular spots for these attacks at night, example is between the Sam Jonah Library and the food market at the new site. As of 10pm Monday night when the news team visited the area, no security personnel was at post even though students have complained several times of being robbed of their laptops and other valuables while returning from the library at night. Another hotspot is from the yet to be completed new administration block through the popular School Bus Road to the old site on campus. Even at places where there are street lights, thieves hide in the bush and rob students of their valuables. The area has also become home to some mentally challenged people, heightening the insecurity on campus. Meanwhile the Pro-Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor George K T Oduro has assured that management will continue to consider the welfare of students.
