The Ghana Education Service (GES) has issued a circular to all regional directors of education to report any criminal acts by final-year students in junior and senior high schools for police investigations and subsequent prosecution.
According to the Service, there is a rising tendency of truancy among students after registering for the Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE) and West African Secondary Schools Certificate Examinations (WASSCE).
The candidates are said to consistently refuse to attend classes while some of them engage in “undesirable” acts such as drugs ingestion, bullying, wearing of unprescribed attires, use of mobile phones and blatant disregard for school rules and regulations.
“This is an act the GES considers a major misconduct by students,” the GES said in the circular issued by Directir-General Professor Kwasi Opoku-Amankwaa on Thursday, June 9.
It indicated that sanctions such as deboardinisation, writing exams under police/parent escort and dismissal from exams hall to write the papers should be meted out to the defaulting students.
