The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has urged stakeholders of the Dr. Hilla Limann Technical University to embrace peace and unity for the institution’s progress.
Speaking during the inauguration of the University’s newly constituted Governing Council in Accra, the Minister expressed concern over ongoing labour agitations, warning that continued unrest threatens the academic stability and development of the University.
“Industrial disputes and conflicts are, unfortunately, part of institutional life,” the Minister stated. “What matters most is how we manage these issues to ensure peace and harmony prevail on our campuses,” he said.
Established in April 2020, Dr. Hilla Limann Technical University has faced repeated challenges, including several labour-related disruptions largely stemming from governance concerns. These have affected the smooth running of academic and administrative activities.
A key setback, the Minister noted, is the lack of accommodation facilities for students, which makes the university less appealing to both students and their parents.
“To date, this is one of the only universities in Ghana without a hostel,” he remarked. “I am pleased to announce that the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has been directed to allocate funds for the construction of a 600-bed hostel this year. Work should commence soon,” Mr Iddrisu announced.
In response, the newly appointed Chairman of the Governing Council, Professor Julius Fobil, assured the Minister of the Council’s commitment to addressing the University’s challenges.
“We acknowledge the concerns raised, especially regarding labour unrest,” he said. “I will bring my experience and leadership to bear in resolving these issues and restoring stability.”
The call for peace and proactive governance is seen as a crucial step toward unlocking the full potential of Dr. Hilla Limann Technical University.
