Drivers of MPs petition Speaker for salary increment, resting place

Drivers of members of Ghana’s Parliament have petitioned leadership of the House – particularly the Speaker – to take steps to improve their general conditions of service. According to them, most of their engagements have been by word of mouth from their employers. In the petition addressed to Speaker Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye, the Association of Members of Parliament Chauffeurs of Ghana Association said they are demanding an increase in salaries to “help us to survive in the economy”. “Our services with our employers are not secured to the manner of our engagement,” the petition signed by General Secretary Farouk Abdul-Aziz stated. “We are hired and fired at the MPs own discretion, we hope and plead to your outfit to help streamline it including payment of our Social Security and National Insurance Trust which are not being paid.” They claim the MPs have decided to pay them GH¢400 monthly salaries at the law makers’ own discretion. “Right Honourable Speaker, aside the increment of our salary, we plead to your highly respected office to help put measures so that entitlements such as out of station allowance, holidays allowance as well as risk allowance are paid.” They pointed out as a major worry a resting place when Parliament is in session. “We plead with the leadership to kindly help provide a temporal waiting place for us to rest because our work comes with a lot of fatigue and stress.” Source: editors.3news.com|Ghana Follow @3Newsgh
