Dissolve Schools Inspectorate Agency – NAGRAT

NAGRAT President, Angel Carbonu

The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has called for a dissolution of the National Schools Inspectorate Agency (NASIA).

According to the President of NAGRAT, Eric Angel Carbonu, the NASIA has failed to supervise upgrade of school infrastructure and standards, despite collecting fees from private schools.

Mr Carbonu said this in an interview with our labour correspondent, in Accra on July 22.

Parliament has passed the new Education Act 2020, Act 1023. The act seeks to establish regulatory bodies for the education sector.

The regulatory bodies are expected to formulate national policies to sanitize education in the country. One of the regulatory bodies is the NASIA which is mandated to supervise upgrade of infrastructure and maintaining standards in schools.

The Authority is to also ensure that pre-tertiary teachers are properly trained to gain relevant skills.

However, the President of NAGRAT has criticised the institution for failing in its work.

He suggested that government should dissolve the NASIA immediately.

“There is the need for a review of the whole NASIA concept, because it is not achieving any purpose,” he explained.

Mr Carbonu criticised the Ministry of Education for not recruiting the qualified educationist to for the Authority.

“We need to even look at the qualification and the competencies of the people who are running NASIA and see whether they are properly cut out to inspect education”.

“In the Ghana Education Service, we have the circuit supervisors. The duty of the circuit supervisor is to go down to the schools, circuit supervisors are to regularly supervise schools. Who and who is doing that for NASIA? Should we have a parallel institution doing the same work as circuit supervisors? He asked.

“I will suggest that for the senior high schools, we create supervision division in the schools who then will be responsible for the supervision,” Mr Carbonu proposed.
