A 16-member high-level delegation from the Gambia’s Parliament Standing Committee on Defence and Security, led by Samba Jallow, paid a study visit to the Ministry of the Interior in Accra on Thursday, May 29.
The visit aimed to learn from the Ministry and strengthen bilateral ties between the two countries.
The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, welcomed the delegation in Parliament, where the meeting took place, and emphasised the importance of sharing ideas in governance, noting that no country can achieve success alone, highlighting the need for cooperation.
Alhaji Muntaka provided an overview of the Ministry’s operations and its agencies, with a focus on the National Peace Council. He noted that the Council plays a vital role in Ghana’s democratic process, promoting peace and tolerance. The Minister stressed that the absence of war does not necessarily mean peace, emphasising the importance of handling issues with care and respect in a democratic setup.
He noted that democracy hinges on patience, tolerance, justice, and other values and that Ghana has made strides in democracy because both parties in Government and opposition coexist peacefully, tolerating each other’s views, which is the way forward.
The Gambian delegation expressed gratitude for the warm reception and commended Ghana’s progress in promoting peace and stability. Both parties agreed to foster stronger ties, sharing ideas and expertise to benefit their respective nations.
The visit underscores the importance of parliamentary diplomacy and cooperation between nations, particularly in West Africa. By sharing best practices and experiences, Ghana and Gambia can work together to address common challenges and promote regional stability.
