The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa, has urged Ghanaians to wait patiently for the declaration of the results of the presidential election held on December 7.

According to her, it is barely 23 hours after the polls ended, whereas they have planned to declare the results within 72 hours.

She therefore asked Ghanaians to wait patiently for the results as they trickle in from the Regional Collation Centres.

“I would like to appeal that citizens exercise patience. It is only 23 hours after polls. I would like to allay the fears and anxiety of the citizens that we are committed to upholding the will of the people as captured on the pink sheets,” she said during a press conference on December 8.

She announced that so far, the Commission has received results from only the Ahafo Region. “We hope others will come soon,” the returning officer of the presidential election stated.

Explaining the delay, Mrs Mensa said the Commission operates a robust collation system in the interest of transparency.

“We have a process which is elaborate and involves party agents along the way. Pink sheets form the basis of results we announce. Results from constituencies go to regional collation centres before being forwarded to the National Collation Centre. Then as the returning officer of the presidential election, I will scrutinise and declare,” the EC Chairperson explained.

She added that the massing up of party supporters at the various collation centres could also be blamed for the smooth collation of the results.

Mrs Mensa assured that, “If we receive all the remaining results within the next hour, we will declare. We have walked the walk of transparency, accountability and objectivity. This election has been peaceful, free and fair. I assure you that the will of the people will be declared.”
