Dec 7 elections: Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations meets EC to advocate for greater electoral inclusion

The Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations (GFD) will meet with the Electoral Commission (EC) on Wednesday, 20th November, 2024 at the Electoral Commission to advocate for greater electoral inclusion for Persons with
Disabilities in the upcoming 2024 general elections.

The high-level meeting, to be held at the Electoral Commission’s headquarters, centers on evaluating the Commission’s provisions for Persons with Disabilities and presenting key recommendations to ensure accessible and inclusive electoral processes.

The GFD delegation, will be accompanied by representatives from Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs), civil society partners, and allied organizations. The team is engaging the EC to assess current measures and highlight gaps that hinder full participation of Persons with Disabilities in electoral activities.

This critical engagement is part of GFD’s broader advocacy agenda to uphold the electoral rights of all Ghanaians, regardless of ability.

Evaluating Electoral Inclusion Measures

The GFD has previously presented key recommendations to the EC to provide inclusive electoral services, such as tactile ballot guides for visually impaired voters and designated polling stations with ramps.

This meeting affords the opportunity for a follow up evaluation and sharing of the GFD’s monitoring reports to consolidate preparations towards the upcoming polls.

The GFD will also use the occasion to make other major announcements relating to the community’s participation in the December elections.

The GFD is upbeat about greater inclusive opportunities for eligible voters living with disabilities in Ghana to fully exercise their franchise come December 7 2024 in ease and dignity.
