Deadly gun attack: Interior Minister bans movement of motorbikes, tricycles in Binduri

The Minister for the Interior, Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak, has banned the movement of motorbikes, tricycles, ‘aboboyaa’, and the like for both men and women in Binduri Township and its environs in the Upper East Region

The Minister said any person found riding motorbikes, tricycles, and ‘aboboyaa’ will be arrested and prosecuted.

Alhaji Muntaka Mubaraka said this in a statement on Sunday, April 13, after reviewing the curfew hours imposed on  Binduri from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am with immediate effect.

The Minister acted on the advice of the Upper East Regional Security Council and by Executive Instrument, the statement said.

“Government urges Chiefs, Elders, Opinion Leaders, Youth, and people of the area to exercise restraint in the face of the challenges confronting them as well as to use non-violent means to channel their energies into ensuring peace in the area.

“Meanwhile, there is a total ban on all persons in the Binduri Township and its environs from carrying arms, ammunition, or any offensive weapons, men wearing smocks, and any persons found with any arms or ammunition will be arrested and prosecuted.

“Additionally, the movement of motorbikes, tricycles, ‘aboboyaa’, and the like are banned for both men and women. Any person found riding motorbikes, tricycles, and ‘aboboyaa’ will be arrested and prosecuted,” the statement said.

This statement was issued after a deadly gun attack in Binduri resulted in the death of a man.

The incident occurred near Atuba, a suburb of Binduri Central. While authorities confirmed receiving information about the attack, they were unable to provide further details at this time.

However, the security sources revealed that the attackers set the victim’s body and motorcycle on fire after the killing.

Although the exact motive behind the attack remains unconfirmed, initial assessments suggest it may be linked to the ongoing Bawku chieftaincy conflict, which has seen a resurgence in recent weeks.

This latest violent episode comes less than 24 hours after a high-level visit by the Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to the Bawku Naba, Asigri Abugrago Azoka II.

During the visit, the IGP appealed to the Bawku Naba for closer collaboration with security agencies to help restore peace and stability in the area. He pledged that the police would act professionally and remain neutral in their peacekeeping efforts.

The IGP’s commitment came in response to a petition submitted by the Kusaug Youth, who raised serious concerns about the conduct of some police officers operating in the region.

Meanwhile, the Bawku chapter of the Mamprugu Youth Association (MAYA) has strongly condemned the attack. The group is calling on the government to implement urgent measures, including increasing security presence in Binduri and enforcing a restriction on motorbike usage in the area.

MAYA has also urged the Member of Parliament for Binduri, Mahmoud Issifu, to take swift and practical action to address the escalating insecurity in the constituency.
