Dampare absent as Mahama meets replaced heads of security agencies

President John Mahama met with the recently replaced heads of various security services.

The President met with three of outgoing security heads on Monday, March 17.

However, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, the outgone Inspector General of Police, was notably absent.

Reason for his absence is yet to be known.

Present at the meeting were the former head of the Ghana Prisons Service, Isaac Kofi Egyir, former boss of the Ghana National Fire Service, Julius A. Kuunuor and Kwame Asuah Takyi, former head of the Immigration Service who were all relieved of their positions at about the same time as Dr Dampare.

The meeting follows the appointment of COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the new Inspector General of Police, DGP 3 Patience Baffoe-Bonnie as Director-General of Prisons, DCFO Daniella Mawusi Ntow Sarpong as Chief Fire Officer, and DCI Samuel Basentale Amadu as Comptroller-General of Immigration.

In a post on Facebook on Monday, March 17, President Mahama expressed his sincere appreciation to the outgoing officers for their service to the nation.

Dampare’s removal did not augur well with some security analysts who considered his transformative leadership and had wished for him to stay in office.

Before his removal was announced, Imani Ghana and security expert Professor Kwesi Aning filed a suit to prevent his removal as well as other security heads from office.

The joint suit was seeking to restrain the President from removing the Inspector-General of Police and some other heads of the security agencies until an ongoing case relating to the matter is decided by the court in May 2025.

According to the plaintiff, the said security heads will be unfairly treated if they are removed before the matter which is pending before the Supreme Court is heard.

However, hours after the suit gained public attention, the Office of the President announced a new IGP, COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno.

On the back of the development, Private legal practitioner, Martin Kpebu, has said that the Supreme Court will decide whether or not its interpretation on the suit against the removal of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and other heads of security agencies, should have a retrospective effect.
