A 33-year-old businessman, Nicholas Adams, has been granted bail by the Accra Circuit Court One in the sum of GHC150,000 with three sureties, two of whom must be justified, following allegations of defrauding another businessman of GHC134,000 under the pretence of importing a container of car tyres.
Ghana News Agency (GNA) reports that Adams is accused of deceiving Christopher Tetteh, a businessman based in Teshie, into paying the amount for the procurement of a 40-foot container filled with tyres.
According to Police Inspector Wisdom Alorwu, the complainant, Mr. Tetteh, resides in Teshie, while the accused lives in Amasaman.
On May 16, 2024, Adams allegedly took the money from Mr. Tetteh with the promise of supplying the tyres.
To build trust, Adams reportedly created a WhatsApp group, adding Mr. Tetteh and another individual he presented as an importer.
However, after receiving the funds, Adams failed to deliver the tyres, making several excuses.
The supposed importer later revealed that Adams had no legitimate business dealings and provided a recorded phone conversation as evidence of the alleged fraud.
After Mr. Tetteh reported the incident to the police, Adams was arrested. During interrogation, he admitted that the voice in the recorded conversation was his.
Investigations also revealed that he had refunded GHC45,000 to the complainant, but had yet to pay back the full amount.
The court granted Adams bail and adjourned the case to a later date as investigations continue.
