Create specialised courts if the Supreme Court is overwhelmed with cases – Ohene Ntow

Supreme Court of Ghana

Nana Ohene Ntow, a special advisor to independent presidential aspirant Alan Kyerematen, has suggested to the Chief Justice to set up specialized courts to handle specific cases without those cases necessarily traveling all the way to the Supreme Court.

It was his view that the creation of specialized courts would ease the burden placed on the Supreme Court for which more justices would be required.

Contributing to a discussion on the letter by the Supreme Court’s Chief Justice, Justice Gertrude Araba Esaba Torkonoo to President Akufo-Addo requesting for the addition of five more Judges, Nana Ohene Ntow said on TV3’s Key Point Saturday, July 6 that “Why should all land cases end up at the Supreme Court, why should all business cases end up at the Supreme Court, why should all matrimonial cases end up in the system? Why don’t you create a specialized court who have finite authority?..

“Every land case has the potential to travel to the Supreme Court, every matrimonial case has the potential to travel to the Supreme Court, every business case has the potential to travel to the Supreme Court.”

The Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkonoo has justified her recommendation to President Akufo-Addo to consider five judges for the Supreme Court. She said the Supreme Court needs more judges to handle the overwhelming number of cases currently before it.

“There are several cases pending and that is why we need more Supreme Court judges,” she said while explaining the reason for the adjournment of the ruling on the lawsuits filed by Researcher Amanda Odoi and Broadcast Journalist Richard Dela Sky regarding the anti-LGBT bill, Madam Torkonoo emphasized the need for more Supreme Court judges.
