Founder of the defunct UT Bank and a Ghanaian Businessman, Prince Kofi Amoabeng, has expressed his disappointment and concern about the state of corruption in Ghana.
He criticized the presidency for tolerating corruption. He noted that the president’s silence on the extravagant lifestyles of his appointees, many of whom had no prior income, is alarming.
The Ex-Military Officer of the Ghana Armed Forces believes that the president is aware of the discrepancy between their means and lavish spending, implying that the government is encouraging corruption.
“They know themselves, as in the president and his people and he sees that this guy’s (appointees) level of spending and the whole demeanor of the person and the assets he is controlling are way beyond his means and it is impossible. The president must see it so actually they (government) are encouraging corruption” he said.
Amoabeng also stated that he trusts John Dramani Mahama, the NDC flagbearer, to handle corruption better than the current administration. He questioned Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s ability to address the economic suffering of Ghanaians, suggesting that his inaction now raises doubts about his commitment to change.
Regarding the economy, Amoabeng attributed the current challenges to poor leadership and lack of vision, which has wiped out investments and impoverished many Ghanaians. When asked about recent economic gains, he dismissed them as mere “economic jargons,” citing the devaluation of his pension from $6,500 to $1,200 over the past 12 years as a more telling indicator of the economy’s true state.
“When I retired 12 years ago my pension was worth 6,500 dollars, now it is worth 1,200 dollars by exchange rate do you have to throw all these figures at me” He narrated.
