COP29: CSO urges politicians to prioritise climate change in their policy proposals

Charles Smith

The United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 29) is underway in Baku, the capital of Azaberdjan with more than 200 leaders discussing mitigation strategies of climate change.

In Ghana, civil society group, Connecting Communities, Climate and Politics is demanding political party leaders to factor in their policies clear road map to mitigate climate change.

Project coordinator, Charles Smith is saddened by political party leaders’ loud silence on climate issues.

According to the World Meteorological Organization, the year 2024 has been on record to be the hottest year ever resulting from climate change.

This is because harmful environmental practices including forest degradation and the emission of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere through the combustion of fossil fuel from vehicles and industries have led to rapid depletion of the ozone layers causing intense global warning.

Ghana, like other countries in the world are already reeling under the effect of climate change, especially in the area of agriculture and fisheries.

in Baku the capital of Azerbaijan in Europe more than two hundred global leaders are participating in COP 29 to deliberate on climate financing modules as well as measures to mitigate its devastating effect.

Back at home in Ghana, Connecting Communities, Climate and Politics is pushing for leaders campaigning to be voted for in the December 7 elections, to detail clearly their policies regarding the mitigation of climate change in the country.

Charles Smith, the Project Coordinator for the organization, speaking to editors.3news.com indicated that “we have played with our environment and now we cannot bear the brunt of its impact.” This is the time that the politicians must talk about how they intend to address the climate situation, but they are not saying anything about it.”

He noted that the politicians only proffer solutions when parts of the country have been engulfed in flood hence, the need for them to include their policies a road to address concerns of the environment.

Charles Smith believes that the situation, if no immediate action is taken to address could impact food security in the country.

The United Nations Climate Change Conference is the world’s only multilateral decision-making forum on climate change that brings together almost every country on earth.

This year’s conference will span eleven days ending on November 22, 2024.
