The Upper East Regional President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), Amoak Afoko, has asked the government to consider putting up a school in the region that will be dedicated to legal training.
In his address at the ongoing Bar Conference in the regional capital, Bolgatanga, Mr Afoko said the region can boast of many educational institutions which cover diverse areas. He mentioned the C. K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Science (CKT-UTAS) formerly University for Development Studies (UDS), Navrongo campus, as a public university the region boasts of. He also mentioned the St, John Bosco’s Teacher Training College and the Gbewa Teacher Training College as the colleges of education in the region.
In the area of health, he mentioned a number of Nursing Training Colleges in the region, noting there is no school for legal education.
Mr Afoko thus appealed that it is about time considerations are made to give the region a school for legal education.
“Clearly missing in all these educational institutions is an institution that trains lawyers and we would humbly appeal to authorities that be to seriously consider the establishment of a Ghana Law School” he appealed.
Regarding the judiciary, he said the region has two High Courts, two Circuit Courts and Seven District Magistrate Courts serving a population of about 1.3 million.
This year’s conference is on the theme, ‘Ensuring an increase in revenue mobilization through taxation for the purpose of accelerated national development: The role of the lawyer’. It was selected to emphasise the importance of efficient taxation to nation-building.
A key highlight of the conference will be the election of new executives to run the affairs of the Bar at the National Level for the next three years. Five positions are to be contested but two of the positions (Public Relations Officer and National Secretary) have candidates who are going unopposed. The other positions are National President, National Vice President and National Treasurer.
For the position of National President, Yaw Boafo, the Outgoing National Secretary will contest against Efua Ghartey, the Greater Accra Regional President of the Association.
Meanwhile, some lawyers, some of whom are members of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has called on members at the association’s annual conference held in the Upper East Regional capital, Bolgatanga, to use the opportunity to “navigate a clean break from the Association’s recent history”.
