Ghana has so far confirmed 43 cholera cases with 2 deaths recorded.
12 persons are on admission and close to 200 suspected cases all within the Ada East and West districts of the Greater Accra Region.
According to health officials, some of the cases were transported from neighbouring countries who are equally reporting cases of cholera.
The Ghana Health Service on October 11 announced the outbreak of cholera in the Ada West and East districts of the Greater Accra Region. Following the declaration of the outbreak, several key interventions are being rolled out by the various District Security Coordinating Councils.
The Director of Public Health at the Ghana Health Service, Dr Franklyn Asiedu Bekoe, in an exclusive interview with 3news Sarah Apenkroh said the country’s response to the outbreak is in 3 folds with more focus on identifying cases early and tracing their contact.
According to him, some of the cases were imported by Ghanaian traders who ply across the regional border.
He said a lot of efforts are ongoing to contain the spread of the disease and address the fundamental issue with poor sanitation within the coastal communities with the various stakeholders.
“A lot of efforts are ongoing on the ground and they are yielding results. We have oral rehydration centres within the epicentre areas to offer first aids to affected persons. Though the cases are surging, and the risk of spread is high, they are mild. We have 43 confirmed cases. 37 in Ada East and 6 in Ada West. Some were imported. I can’t confirm exact figure of suspected cases, but I think it is between 100 to 200. 12 are currently on admission and 2 have died”. He noted.
He further noted that cases are being reported in almost all the coastal countries bordering Ghana and so there are meetings ongoing with ECOWAS to look at the disease burden in the sub-region.
