Call off the strike – Labour Commission directs NIA staff

The National Labour Commission (NLC) has directed aggrieved staff of the National Identification Authority (NIA) to call off their strike.

At a meeting held on June 12, the National Labour Commission listened to both parties in the matter. After deliberations, the Commission directed the aggrieved workers to call off their strike.

However, the national leadership of the Public Services Workers Union (PSWU) says it can only call off the strike after meeting with the members tomorrow.

The Deputy General Secretary of the PSWU, John Sampah said, they are disappointed in the ruling.

“We’re looking at dealing with the real issues, and the Commission dwelt on procedure, saying that the local union has no capacity to call a strike. We pleaded with the Commission in caucus to put aside the procedure and attend to the matters, but the Commission said, the procedure too is necessary.

“Although the local union called the strike the local union and mother unions are the same. We are all in this country, when you go to other institutions, apart from their Single Spine Salary they have been given other allowances,” he said.

Part of the ruling by the NLC is to ensure that the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) and Management of NIA begin negotiations.

The Director of Salaries at FWSC, Cephas Amada indicated another round of negotiations on Friday, June 14.

“We are ready to continue with negotiations in good faith as we have already issued invitation letters to the unions and Management of NIA. So we are ready, we will meet them on Friday,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the Executive Secretary of the NIA Prof. Ken Attafuah has promised to continue with negotiations with the workers.

Prof Attafuah assured of getting the concerns of the workers resolved.

“The National Identification Authority has done nothing wrong, the Executive Secretary of NIA has done nothing wrong, some staff of NIA who constitute a union have embarked on strike. The people who declared the strike were not present, NIA has been embarrassed we were present, we are negotiating under the leadership of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission,” he said.
