A leading member of the opposition New Patriotic Party, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, has asked the Ghana Police to do everything possible to arrest perpetrators of the ‘killing’ of Adams Mahama, Upper East Regional Chairman of the NPP.

Mr. Mahama, who until last week was in the news following the disruption of a party meeting in Bolgatanga at which the party’s Chairman and the General Secretary were chased out, died suddenly on Thursday Morning.

This followed an acid attack on Wednesday night by some persons believed to be disgruntled members of the party.

So far, one person, Gregory Afoko, believed to be a brother to the party Chairman, Paul Afoko, is in the grip of the police for his alleged role in the incident.

Party leaders have called for calm as angry youth are threatening attacks on persons they suspect are behind the attack.

Mr. Alan Kyerematen in his statement Thursday, described the incident as shameful and asked police to do more to ensure justice.

He also asked party members to remain calm.

 Below is the full statement

I have learnt with great shock of the sudden and unfortunate death of Mr. Mahama Adams, the Upper East Regional Chairman of our great party.

I wish to join all party members and other sympathizers in condemning this barbaric and criminal act. I urge the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies to do everything possible to apprehend the perpetrators of this shameful crime.

To the family of Mr. Mahama Adams, I share your grief and sadness in this difficult period and pray for God’s divine protection for you. Let me also seize this opportunity to urge all members of the New Patriotic Party and indeed all Ghanaians to remain calm and exercise restraint in their comments on this incident, and allow the law enforcement agencies to bring the criminals to justice.
