Ashanti GJA joins fight against climate change

The Ashanti regional chapter of the Ghana Journalists Association has embarked on a tree planting exercise to help protect the environment and mitigate the effect of climate change. The exercise forms part of activities lined-up ahead of the maiden regional awards ceremony slated for May 31, 2019. Both GJA members and non-members participated in the exercise to help in safeguarding the environment through greening activities. Ashanti regional chairman of the GJA, Kingsley Hope, said the planting exercise is aimed at fostering sustainable environmental sanitation and also a way of contributing towards meeting the Sustainable Development Goals 6 and 13 target of improved sanitation and mitigation climate change disasters respectively. He stated that the media has a mandate not to only inform, educate, and entertain but also to actively participate in safeguarding the environment. The Association planted about 40 hybrid coconut tree seedlings at Danyame in Kumasi. Members pledged to constantly monitor the growth process of the trees to ensure no one cut it prematurely.
