Asantehene warns chiefs against careless invocation of great oath

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has issued a stern caution to chiefs, queen mothers, and individuals against the careless invocation of the sacred Great Oath of Asanteman.

Speaking at the first Asanteman Traditional Council meeting for 2025 at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi on Monday, January 13, His Majesty emphasized the profound implications of this powerful oath.

Invoking the Great Oath is akin to exacerbating my affliction,” Otumfuo stated.

He explained that the Great Oath is a solemn and sacred instrument for asserting rightful claims within the Asanteman tradition.

He stressed that the careless invocation of the oath, without a thorough understanding of one’s heritage and the weight of such a decision, can have severe consequences.

If one lacks a thorough understanding of their heritage and invokes the oath, they forfeit any entitlements sought and risk losing their standing upon being found guilty,” he warned.

The Asantehene further revealed that in the previous year, four traditional authorities were stripped of their stools due to the deceitful invocation of the Great Oath.

He also recounted the historical and poignant events that led to the establishment of the oath, emphasizing its sacredness and the need to protect its integrity.

Using the oath carelessly is not only an affront to our traditions but also undermines the very essence of the sacred practices that bind Asanteman together,” he added.

Otumfuo called for respect and integrity in handling disputes within the traditional system, urging leaders to uphold the customs and cultural traditions of Asanteman.
