Anas’ exposé: Snr Law Lecturer urges caution in meting out sanctions

A Senior Lecturer at the Ghana School of Law, Maxwell Opoku Agyemang, has admonished the Judicial Council to err on the side of caution over the exposé of ace investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas on the judiciary.

The video exposé – which is scheduled to be premiered on Tuesday, September 22 at the Accra International Conference Center – reveals justices of superior and lower courts engaging in underhand deals said to compromise the delivery of justice in the country.

The Judicial Council on Wednesday, September 9 announced the interdiction of the circuit court judges and magistrates – 22 in all – while 12 high court judges have been given a 48-hour ultimatum to respond to allegations levelled against them.

But speaking on TV3’s News 360 on Wednesday, Mr Opoku Agyemang said inasmuch as justice is aimed at being done, thorough investigations should be conducted in order “to get to the bottom of the matter”.

He said the 48 hours given to the 12 high court judges may not be enough for them to respond and this may culminate in travesty of justice.

He, therefore, charged a five-member investigative committee set up by the Council to do a diligent job by serving justice to all, cautioning that public outcry should not influence them into taking decisions as a result of knee-jerk reactions.

Anas is said to have sent two petitions over his findings – captured in over 500 hours of video footage – to Chief Justice Georgina Theodora Wood and President John Dramani Mahama.
