The conduct of Members of Parliament (MPs) on the Appointments Committee during the vetting of ministerial nominees on Thursday, January 30, 2025, has come under heavy criticism from political analysts and civil society.
Speaking on TV3’s The Key Points on Saturday, February 1, 2025, Economic Policy Analyst Senyo Hosi and Senior Political Advisor Nana Ohene Ntow condemned the MPs’ behaviour, calling it disrespectful to Ghanaians and a stain on parliamentary integrity.
Mr. Hosi did not hold back in his criticism, stating that MPs continue to show disregard for the very people who elected them.
“We should never entertain this type of behaviour from our MPs. Our MPs continue to disrespect us despite what we do for them. This nonsense must stop.”
He further expressed concern that Parliament’s current conduct reflects the deteriorating state of governance in Ghana.
“What is happening in Parliament today is truly a reflection of the state of our affairs. The MPs who got themselves involved in this act must apologize to Ghanaians.”
Echoing Hosi’s sentiments, Nana Ohene Ntow, a Senior Advisor to Alan Kyerematen, said the chaotic scenes in Parliament signal a lack of self-respect within the legislative body.
“We are seeing a Parliament that does not even respect itself. This act by the MPs can never be justified. This same Parliament saw MPs chewing ballot papers, and nothing was done to the culprit.”
Ntow referenced past parliamentary misconduct, including the infamous ballot-paper-chewing incident during the 2021 Speaker election, as an indication that lawmakers continue to act with impunity.
The vetting process of ministerial nominees has been marred by controversy, with reports of heated exchanges, walkouts, and near-physical confrontations.
The Appointments Committee’s work has been highly polarized, with accusations of bias, selective questioning, and a lack of consensus-building between the Majority and Minority Caucuses.
