The Constituency Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Akatsi North, Volta Region, Abraham Ahiabu, has denied being arrested and investigated in connection with the possession of dummy ballot papers, as announced by the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) in a statement.
Clarifying the matter, Mr. Ahiabu indicated that while the police questioned him, he was not under investigation for any wrongdoing.
He told Accra-based Joy FM that the statement by the Immigration Service was a calculated effort to justify border closures in the Volta Region ahead of the December 7 elections.
The press release from the Ghana Immigration Service, which announced his arrest, stated that officers stationed at Hevi, an unapproved route in the Akatsi North District, intercepted three booklets of ballot papers. Each booklet contained 1,000 ballots, translating to 3,000 ballots in total.

The interception occurred during a routine monitoring exercise by immigration officers in the Ave Havi enclave en route to Vodome in neighboring Togo.
During interrogation, Mr. Abraham Ahiabu claimed he was transporting the ballots to Vodome to educate voters on how to cast their ballots during elections. The suspect further claimed he had twenty thousand (20,000) dummy booklets in custody.
According to the Ghana Immigration Service, the suspect has been handed over to the Ghana Police Service Akatsi North District headquarters for further investigations, and the three booklets of dummy ballot papers have been handed over to the Akatsi North District Electoral Commission to verify their authenticity.
The Ghana Immigration Service has assured that any further developments will be reported accordingly.
