Afoko seeks to cripple NPP Congress from discussing his removal

Suspended Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Paul Afoko, is seeking a court order to prevent the party from discussing his removal at Saturday’s extra-ordinary congress scheduled for Sunyani.

Mr. Afoko in a an ex-parte application filed at the Human Rights Court argued that the congress is a grand plot to completely remove him from office, indicating that any such decision taken at the congress would “cause him irreparable damage.”

The extraordinary congress according to party executives is to outdoor its campaign team and outline its strategy for the 2016 elections.

Mr. Afoko is of the view that considering the personalities who are coming for the congress – which includes former national executives, Members of Parliament, former ministers under the Kuffour administration etc, the party would want to dismiss him from the position as National Chair.

Mr. Afoko was suspended for what the party has described as ‘acts of division’ within its leadership. It has however been speculated that his actions were thwarting the efforts of the flagbearer, Nana Akufo Addo.

Fews weeks after Mr. Afoko’s suspension, the General Secretary of the party, Kwabena Agyapong and Second Vice Chair, Sammy Crabbe were also suspended for similar reasons.

They are said to be allies of Mr. Afoko. It is however unknown whether they would also be seeking any court action against the party’s congress.
