Accra Metropolitan Assembly launches major decongestion drive in CBD to restore order and sanitation

AMA Chief Executive Michael Kpakpo Allotey

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), in collaboration with the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly, will commence a major decongestion exercise in Accra’s Central Business District (CBD) today, Tuesday, May 20, 2025.

This initiative aims to restore order and significantly improve sanitation across the city.

The operation will initially target key areas surrounding the AMA Head Office, including Kinbu Road stretching to Railways, the zone from ECG Junction to the King Tackie Tawiah Statue, and the bustling Opera Square extending towards Adabraka.

Speaking to Citi News, AMA Public Relations Officer Gilbert Ankrah confirmed that the exercise will also intensify along vital routes from Wato Junction through King Tackie Tawiah School to Cow Lane, alongside areas around the Accra City Hotel and Mövenpick Hotel.

The plan is straightforward, with the main focus on the areas surrounding the AMA Head Office. All zones within that enclave will be addressed,” Mr. Ankrah stated, emphasizing the comprehensive nature of the cleanup.

Ahead of today’s exercise, AMA Chief Executive Michael Kpakpo Allotey personally engaged with street hawkers operating within the CBD, appealing for their cooperation.

He underscored the importance of collective effort in achieving a cleaner and more organized city. “I am pleading with you to assist us in cleaning up the city and restoring order. We all want a better and more organised environment, and cooperation is vital in achieving that goal,” Mr. Allotey urged.

He also hinted at future opportunities for vendors under the government’s upcoming 24-hour economy policy, which he noted would create new avenues for selling goods overnight. However, for the immediate present, he pleaded with hawkers to vacate pavements as the crucial decongestion exercise proceeds.
