A post-election poll conducted by Global Info Analytics has laid the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 elections on the door step of former President Akufo-Addo.
The report disclosed that 68% of respondents who took part in the poll blamed former President Akufo-Addo for the NPP’s huge defeat in the 2024 elections.
The respondents also held key government officials responsible for the party’s loss in the election.
Per the findings, 40% of respondents blame former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, while 37% attribute the defeat to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, who served as Vice President and was the NPP’s presidential candidate in 2024.
Additionally, 33% blame Dr Matthew Opoku-Prempeh, while 32% hold other government appointees responsible. Members of Parliament were also not exempted as 25% of voters held them responsible for the NPP’s defeat.
Issues about the economy, unemployment and education, remained the top issues and were factored in choices of voters during the 2024 elections. The Akufo-Addo government was undoubtedly a major contributing factor for the NPP’s loss.
Only 9% of the respondents blame Kennedy Agyapong who contested in the NPP’s primaries but did not lead the party into the elections.
This indicates that while intra-party competition may have influenced voter decisions, the majority of the blame was placed on those directly associated with the government’s administration.
The findings highlight the complexities of voter sentiment and the challenges facing the NPP as it seeks to rebuild after its electoral loss.
The poll also explained why President John Mahama won the election by landslide. The findings suggests that Dr Bawumia lost grounds to John Mahama in the last weeks and days of the campaign. The poll shows, only 83% of voters who had intended to vote for Dr. Bawumia actually voted for him on the election day.
According to the poll, nearly 14% switched their votes for Mahama on the voting day, according to polling data and 3% broke out for other candidates.
