A new nationwide survey by Global Info Analytics shows that a majority of Ghanaians support the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo by President John Mahama, nearly a month after the action was taken.

According to the poll, 53% of voters approve of the suspension, 20% oppose it, 12% remain neutral, and 15% had no opinion. The suspension, which took effect on April 22, followed the President’s decision to act on three petitions against the Chief Justice after a prima facie case was established.

The poll, conducted between May 2 and May 19, 2025, sampled 2,558 registered voters across all 16 regions, with a margin of error of ±2.51%.

When respondents who initially opposed the suspension, were neutral, or had no opinion were further asked if they would support the Chief Justice’s removal should unlawful conduct be proven, only 20% said they would support her removal—a decline from 30% in April. Meanwhile, 33% said they would still oppose her removal (down from 35%), 20% were neutral (up from 19%), and 27% had no opinion (up from 16%).

Regionally, the suspension was backed by a majority of voters in all regions except North East and Northern. Along political lines, support was high among NDC voters (87%) and floating voters (54%), but only 13% of NPP voters approved the suspension.

Among those who opposed the suspension, 51% were NPP voters, 2% NDC, 9% floating voters, 2% other parties, and 9% from those who withheld party affiliation.

President Mahama’s decision invoked Article 146(6) of the Constitution, which requires a committee to investigate allegations against a superior court judge when a prima facie case is established.
