3 Chinese, Ghanaian face 3-yr imprisonment for illegal mining

Nkawie Circuit Court presided by His Lordship Justice John Michael Abbey on Friday, January 8 fined 3 Chinese and 1 Ghanaian GH¢109,000 failure to pay which they will be imprisoned for 3 years.

The men had encroached one of the biggest forests in Ghana, Asananyo Forest near Nyinahin/Bibiani Road in the Ashanti Region.

They had also engaged in illegal mining popularly known as galamsey.

The complainant Nana Poku Bosompem, who is the Nkawie District Forestry Manager, stressed that his outfit will not entertain anyone to do galamsey in a forest reserve.

He called on all stakeholders to prevent and conserve Ghana’s forest from destruction.

The Court has given the culprits seven days to pay the fines and also their sophisticated machines have been seized by the Nkawie police.
