Neighbours rescue 2 children, nanny from SSNIT flat fire

The fire started at a time that it was raining[/caption] A timely intervention by neighbours saved two children and their nanny from being burnt Wednesday night when fire gutted their apartment within then Adentan SSNIT flats at a time that it was raining. Neighbours forced the main door to the room opened to rescue the three persons who shouted for help after detecting the fire in the apartment at about 7:45pm. One bedroom in the first floor of Block 87, including the bathrooms and parts of the living room were all burnt. It took personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service at Madina 30 minutes to arrive at the scene and 15 minutes to completely fight the fire. Even though there is a fire station within the SSNIT flats, the fire tender was said to be faulty at the time. Some tenants who witnessed the fire said they saw some sparkles coming from the room and later heard the louvre blades exploding as a result of the fire. There were two children and their nanny in the apartment when the fire started and all escaped unharmed as some other tenants forced the main door open for them to leave the room. The nanny who gave her name only as Anna said: “we were in the hall when my little brother said he could smell something burning. We checked all the plugs in the hall, then went to the kitchen and saw nothing”. According to her, they went back to the living room but the smell kept growing stronger and the little boy went towards their room and on seeing the fire he screamed “it’s our room, it’s our room.” [caption id="attachment_115544" align="aligncenter" width="1035"] The scene Thursday morning[/caption] She said they started to call for help. Anna wondered what could have sparked the fire because she said all plugs in the bedroom of the children were not functioning. Assistant Divisional Officer Boafo of the Madina Fire station who lead the team of six firemen to the scene said, they suspect an electrical fault, but said they will investigate establish the actually cause of the fire.
