NDC displayed opulence, profligacy & exhibited violence in primaries – NPP claims

NPP General Secretary John Boadu

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has raised concerns over what it termed was the level of opulence and profligacy displayed by some candidates in the first round of the National Democratic Congress’ primaries on Saturday.

A statement issued Sunday by the NPP General Secretary John Boadu said the “vulgar display of opulence and profligacy” by some of the parliamentary aspirants in some constituencies is “worrying”.

Though the NPP admitted the primaries were “largely smooth”, there were some violent acts and intimidation in some constituencies that nearly marred the beauty of the democratic process in electing parliamentary candidates for the NDC ahead of the 2020 general elections.

It mentioned Ho Central, Cape Coast South, Ningo Prampram, Sefwi Akontombra and Sunyani West constituencies as areas where the alleged violent acts were recorded.

“The NPP hopes that the 2020 electioneering campaign will not see some of these ugly occurrences as the party commits itself to running a peaceful, clean and decent campaign and adhering to the democratic principles of engagement,” the statement said.

The NPP has thus called on the NDC to also make similar commitments in the interest of the country.

NPP to win 2020

Meanwhile, it has congratulated all aspirants who won their bid to lead the NDC into the 2020 parliamentary election, but said Ghanaians will vote for NPP candidates due to the level of work done by the Akufo-Addo government.

“With the laudable achievements of the Akufo-Addo government in all sectors of the Ghanaian economy and in every constituency of the country, the NPP is confident that regardless of the persons so elected or selected as NDC’s parliamentary candidates, the Ghanaian people would not only retain the government but also vote to maintain the party’s overwhelming majority in parliament”.
