N/R NPP petition Nat’l Council over Afoko, Agyapong

The Northern Region branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has asked National Chairman Paul Awentami Afoko and General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong to resign their positions to aid investigations into the cause of death of Upper East Region Chairman Alhaji Adams Mahama.

Alhaji Mahama died of acid wounds last Thursday after he was attacked near his residence the night before.

One of the two suspected attackers, Gregory Afoko, who is standing trial at an Accra Magistrate Court, is said to be a brother to the national chairman.

At an extraordinary congress held in Tamale on Tuesday, May 26, 600 delegates appended their signature to a petition to be presented to the National Council for the two national officers – elected during a party conference in Tamale in 2014 – to resign their positions.

They insisted, however, that the two embattled national executives will still remain members of the party.

Deputy Secretary in the Region Kudus Muhammad told our correspondent after the meeting that the unity of the NPP ahead of the 2016 is what they are aiming at.

TV3’s Zakaria Abdul-Kadiri said 11 police officers were deployed to provide security during the meeting, which follows similar ones  held across the country on Monday.

Volta, Central and Eastern regional executives have already submitted petitions for the two elected officers to step aside for investigations over the murder to be carried out.
