The court has set today, Thursday, January 14, to commence the hearing of the petition in which the petitioner John Mahama is seeking among other things the annulment of the declaration of the 2020 presidential election results which pronounced the 2nd Respondent Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo winner.
Mr. Mahama also wants an order directed at the 1st Respondent Electoral Commission of Ghana to rerun the election between himself and Akufo-Addo on claims that per the results declared, none of the 12 candidates met the constitutional threshold to be elected president.
Both 1st Respondent Electoral Commission and 2nd Respondent Akufo-Addo have since filed their responses raising preliminary objections which seek the dismissal of the petition right from the beginning.
Spokespersons for both John Mahama and Akufo-Addo who spoke to 3news.com are hopeful they have a case and are ready to advance their cases in court when hearing begins.
Ahead of the hearing, 3news.com has sighted a motion filed by lawyers of the petitioner John Mahama asking the court to broadcast the proceedings live.
The action of the petitioner is in accordance with Rule 69C (4) of C.I. 99, where provision is made for the proceedings of the court to be transmitted live if the court so determines.
If granted, this will be the second time an election petition will be broadcast live, the first being in 2012 when the Fourth Republic experience its first election petition.
