Mahama tells Akufo-Addo to fight ‘upsurge of corruption & nepotism’

December 31, 2018

File: [L-R] Former President Mahama and President Akufo-Addo
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s leadership has witnessed upsurge in the incidences of corruption and nepotism, former president John Mahama has stated.

In a social media post Monday to commemorate the 37th anniversary of the 31st December Revolution, Mahama observed the level of corruption and nepotism under Akufo-Addo within two years has been in “historic proportions”

These, Mahama said, are clear deviation from the revolutionary values for which people laid down their lives for.

“I urge President Akufo-Addo to give meaning to his pledge to fight corruption and nepotism by investigating and prosecuting the many allegations made against his appointees,” he said.

The former president who is seeking the mandate of his National Democratic Congress for a comeback to contest the 2020 elections said the 31st December revolution marks a pivotal period in the country’s national life.

He said it is a day, which reminds Ghanaians of the period in our history, which eventually birthed the fourth republican democracy.

“On this day, I commend President Jerry John Rawlings, cadres of the revolution, members of the NDC and all Ghanaians for our collective sacrifices made towards our enduring democracy,” Mahama said.

Mahama however said despite Ghana’s journey towards sustainable democracy witnessing regrettable and turbulent occurrences, the principles of probity, transparency and accountability were established and have endured almost four decades after.

“Sadly, the recent upsurge in incidences of corruption and nepotism of historic proportions under the current administration, are a clear deviation from the revolutionary values for which people laid down their lives,” he said.
