Flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has called on the Electoral Commission to open up for dialogue with political parties regarding election issues.
He said parties’ input into election process will ensure a transparent election in 2020.
Mr. Mahama said this while speaking at the opening of a three-day capacity building retreat for Election Directors from the sixteen electoral regions in Tamale.
The former president said the NDC has had their disagreements with the Electoral Commission not because the party dislikes any of the commissioners.
“Indeed if you look at the history of elections in the country since the Fourth Republic, NDC has been the party that has cooperated most with the Electoral Commission than any other party.”
He quizzed why the EC has not come out with a gazetted result of the 2016 general elections till date.
The flagbearer also admonished the EC to work on their information systems to avoid any attempt by any party to rig the elections.
Mr. Mahama added, “The 2020 elections will determine the future and fortunes of the country and so the EC must remain neutral and credible.”
The flagbearer also appealed to the Electoral Commission to ensure the integrity of the elections is not compromised.
He charged the election directors of the NDC to remain focused and vigilant right from the polling station level to the collation centres.
“Selection of party agents to train will not base on longevity of an individual in the party but on merit of determination to serve the interest of the elections.”
He also blamed government’s reckless borrowing on the huge number of ministers and appointees, and hinted an NDC government under his leadership will cut down the size of the ministers.
