Madina-Adentan highway protests should not happen again – Prez

November 9, 2018

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo–Addo has condemned Thursday’s protest by some angry residents at Adentan.

The protesters protested on the Madina-Adentan highway in Accra, demanding footbridges be fixed on the corridor to avert the recent road carnage, which appears to be on the ascendancy.

The death of a first-year student of West Africa Senior High School (WASS) Thursday added to the ugly statistics of people who have lost their lives on the highway in 2018, sparking the angry residents to set tyres ablaze and mount roadblocks.

But the President observed the protest and the accompanying scuffle between the protesters and the police is “regrettable, and should not happen again”.

While the President expressed his condolences to the bereaved family, he noted:  “Our nation has suffered an unnecessary loss” as a result of the death of the lady.

President Akufo-Addo reiterated an earlier communique from the Inter-Ministerial Committee, announcing plans to have work commence on the footbridges within the coming week.

According to the president, who released a statement on Friday, there is a comprehensive plan which will “address systematically all these infrastructural problems, which are legacies of a past decade of neglect”.

He has, however, urged all drivers and pedestrians to respect traffic regulation, noting it is a collective responsibility to protect human life.
