Kufuor calls for calm in NPP

0
Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has expressed sadness and deep worry over happenings in the New Patriotic Party (NPP), following the death of Upper east Region Chairman Alhaji Adams Mahama last week.

Former President Kufuor, who has been abroad over the period as a result of prior-arranged engagements, on Thursday, May 28 reiterated the need for calm and circumspection in the affairs of the party.

He cautioned party members against acrimonious accusations in the media which only serve to further divide their ranks and allow their detractors to infiltrate them.

Former President Kufuor, who has been engaging the rank and file of the party over the phone on the on-going wrangling, said the NPP needs to unite not only for its own good but for Ghanaians, who are looking up to it as the alternative government.

A statement signed by his aide, Frank Agyekum,  said the former NPP Leader finds it disquieting that issues that must be resolved in accordance with laid down procedures of the party’s constitution are constantly being discussed in the media without regard to the overall effect on its fortunes.

The former president urged that the painful and untimely passing away of Alhaji Mahama should be used to unite the party and not tear it apart.

He further appealed that the national investigative system that has already taken charge of the process be allowed to work rather than the party seeming to preempt the outcome.

Fierce clashes at NPP Head office

0
Reports reaching tv3network.com says fighting has erupted between security personnel at the New Patriotic Party’s head office and alleged supporters of National Chairman, Paul Afoko.

Two persons were severely injured when the clash erupted. The alleged supporters of the National Chairman numbering about 25,went to the party office but were prevented from entering the offices.

According to reports, they were prevented by the security personnel known as ‘Invisible Forces’, wielding machetes and clubs. They are believed to have stormed the party head office to protest what they claim are attempts to remove the National Chairman, Paul Afoko from office.

Police officers have arrived at the scene to calm the situation. This recent clash follows a series of activities that have dragged the NPP into the bad light.

There is a growing consensus across the country within the leadership of the NPP for the National Chairman, Paul Afoko and General Secretary, Kwabena Agyepong to resign their posts.

These calls followed the death of the party’s Upper East Regional Chairman, Adams Mahama who was assaulted with acid and died hours after. This created an uproar within the party with regional executives calling for the two men in question to ‘step aside’ for investigations to proceed.

The National Council of Elders have also joined the calls for the two to step aside but they (Paul Afoko and Kwabena Agepong) have downplayed the calls with the General Secretary insisting that he would stay in office until his tenure runs out in 2018.

The fluid situation within the NPP seems to develop a new angle everyday with the latest being the renewed clashes at the party’s head office.

NPP MPs join calls for Afoko, Agyapong to step aside

0
The Minority in Parliament has asked New Patriotic Party’s National Chairman Paul Awentami Afoko and General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong to step aside “to allow for an impartial investigation into…the gruesome murder of Mr Adams Mahama”.

The death of Alhaji Adams Mahama, the Upper East Region Chairman of the party, has heightened suspicions and mistrust within the leadership of the party.

Alhaji Mahama had organized some members of the party against a purported meeting by Mr Afoko and Mr Agyepong in Bolgatanga exactly a week before his murder. He was acid-attacked by two men, one of whom is a brother to Mr Afoko.

A resolution issued by the NPP Minority in Parliament also questioned the “abysmal” nature in which events prior to the parliamentary primaries have been organized.

Below is the full resolution by the NPP MPs

OBSERVATIONS AND CONCLUSIONS OF THE NPP MINORITY GROUP IN PARLIAMENT

The Members of the Minority New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Parliament met in Parliament after adjournment on Tuesday, May, 26, 2015 and deliberated on developments in the Party. The meeting made the following observations and arrived at the conclusions herein stated and forward same to the National Chairman of the Party as well as other members of the Steering Committee for the necessary action:

  1. That for some time now, especially since the second half of 2014 till date, the party at the constituency, regional and national levels have experienced considerable tumultuous developments bordering on anarchy;
  2. That both the Steering and National Executive Committee have not been holding regular meetings because the persons with the requisite statutory mandate to summon and conduct such meetings have not been discharging their responsibilities sufficiently;
  3. That there appear to be a leadership vacuum and communication gap at centre of the party;
  4. That there appears to be a great degree of mistrust within the leadership ensuing from declared positions taken by the two top most elected officers of the party;
  5. That the handling of the Parliamentary Primaries by the national officers have been most abysmal as it has led to suspicions by the aspirants, notably some Members of Parliament, since the General Secretary has declared that he has personal interest in some constituencies where the Party has incumbent Members of Parliament and therefore has demonstrated that he is neither neutral nor impartial in the conduct of the Parliamentary Primaries which objectivity, neutrality and impartiality a General Secretary is supposed to exhibit;
  6. That the dastardly and heinous criminality perpetrated against the Chairman of the Party for the Upper East Region, Mr Adam Mahama, which has resulted in the tragic death of the said person and the arrest of Mr Gregory Afoko the brother of the National Chairman, Mr Paul Afoko, has further poisoned the atmosphere against the two key officers of the party, Mr Paul A. Afoko (National Chairman) and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong (the General Secretary) to the extent that it has become difficult for the two to discharge their statutory responsibilities effectively at the national head office of the party;
  7. That many otherwise well-placed persons in the party have assumed rather Philippic postures of always attacking persons in the party including, in particular, former President Kufour and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. President Kufour is a principal personality in the resolution of conflicts in the party and any attack on him weakens both his hand and resolve in that enterprise. Nana Akufo-Addo is the flagbearer who must be properly advertised to attract the neutrals and the non-committed and the attack on him after his decisive victory only tend to scare away potential sympathizers.
  8. That in the circumstance, the two national officers be requested, in the interest of peace, unity, trust and stability in the party, to step aside to allow for an impartial investigation into these matters especially the gruesome murder of Mr Adams Mahama, the Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
  9. That, we in the NPP Minority Caucus appeal to all NPP Members, supporters and sympathizers to remain calm in the face of the current storm and that genuine lovers of the party should refrain from doing anything that will further accentuate the tension in the party. The darkest hour in the night is the period just before daybreaks. The NPP must overcome the current difficulties in the overall interest of mother Ghana.

Manhyia South MP challenges NPP leadership to restore calm & unity

New Patriotic Party Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has challenged the leadership of the party, to take responsibility for the current issues of infighting in the party and resolve it before the 2016 elections.

Perceived cracks and factionalism in the party appears to be deepening following the death of the party’s Upper East Regional Chairman, Alhaji Adams Mahama.

The man could not survive an acid attack believed to have been orchestrated by some ‘enemies’ within the party.

The party chairman Paul Afoko, and the General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong, have been fingered in the ghastly incident because they had a fracas with the deceased a fortnight before his death.

The fallouts of the death have culminated into massive calls for the removal of the two national leaders whereas others have asked them to step aside to allow police investigations into the incident.

So far, one suspect, Gregory Afoko, who happens to be a brother to the national Chairman, is in court for his role in the murder. Another suspect, also a member of the NPP in the Upper East Region is on the run.

As pressure piles up on the two national leaders from every quarters of the party, a letter circulated in the media on Tuesday announcing the General Secretary’s resignation. But Mr. Agyepong in a shocking response said he had not signed any letter and that his email may have been hacked.

He stated that he was not ready to resign until his mandate elapses in 2018, adding that his detractors will not succeed in their attempts to bring him down.

But the Manhyia MP, who was speaking on TV3’s New Day, wants the leadership of the party to take responsibility for the mess and take the needed steps that will restore serenity in the party to achieve the unity needed to win elections in 2016.

According to him, that is the only way to make the NPP a credible alternative in the 2016 elections.

“We should not let Ghanaians lose hope in the fact that there is no credible alternative. I am not sure that we just being credible or not will bring us to power. But if voters lose faith in the fact that there is no credible alternative and they don’t see an end to this economic mismanagement, bad things will happen to this country. And what my party is doing is killing all of us; its killing our will. We can’t talk about anything, look at all the headlines here. Even newspapers that have a circulation of 50 are even trumpeting our stories. Just a few weeks ago, I even heard somebody in our party say that Nana Addo is not even our Presidential candidate until he files his document at the Electoral Commission. This is a human problem; it is an ego problem gone bad and we must fix it”.

“I am only an MP but I receive numerous calls everyday with people asking me about what’s happening in the party. We are having sleepless nights and its terrible”.

The Manyhia MP however downplayed attempts by some elements in the NPP and in the incumbent NDC, to blame the challenges on the party’s Flagbearer Nana Akufo-Addo.

According to him, per the party’s constitution, the national chairman is viewed as the leader of the party, however when problems arise, people hypocritically turn to point to the flagbearer as the leader.

He says the party must take steps in the future to clarify that portion of its constitution on who exactly should be regarded as the party leader.

Afoko had ‘serious confrontation’ with late Adams Mahama

0
Gregory Afoko, one of the two main suspects in the death of the Upper East Region Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alhaji Adams Mahama, had a “serious confrontation” with the deceased.

But he was chased away by thugs.

This was contained in the charge sheet of prosecutors at the trial.

Mr Afoko – nicknamed ‘Rasta’ – appeared before the Accra Magistrate Court on Tuesday, May 26 after being arrested on Thursday, May 21 for allegedly acid-attacking the late chairman near his residence in Bolgatanga.

His accomplice, Asabke Alangdi, is on the run, according to the prosecutor.

Alangdi absconded together with his wife, leaving their baby.

The death of Alhaji Mahama has deepened internal wrangling within the largest opposition party with regional executives conferring to pass a vote of no confidence in National Chairman Paul Afoko – whose brother is standing trial – and General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong.

The two national executives had been prevented to hold a meeting in Bolgatanga by the deceased exactly a week before his demise.

Alhaji Mahama was laid to rest last Saturday.

Investigations are ongoing, according to the police.

Nana Addo denies involvement in plot to oust Afoko & Agyapong

Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party has distanced himself from emergency regional meetings by the party to oust embattled Chairman Paul Afoko and General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong.

He described as mischievous a Daily Graphic report suggesting that he Akufo-Addo had sanctioned the congresses on May 25, 2015, knowing too well that the party chairman had called for a National Executive Council meeting the same day.

In a rejoinder the NPP flagbearer noted he was also informed about the clash in dates for the two meetings and directed the chairman to liaise with the Regional chairmen to stand down their meetings for the NEC meeting to be held.

Akufo-Addo said he was rather informed that Paul Akofo had called off the NEC meeting without deference to him.

REJOINDER: REGIONAL CHAIRMEN PLAN TO OUST AFOKO, AGYEPONG

The attention of the Office of Nana Akufo-Addo has been drawn to a story on page 19 of the May 25, 2015 edition of the Daily Graphic titled “Regional Chairmen plan to oust Afoko, Agyepong?”

The story, written by Kobby Asmah and Abdul Aziz, claims that “the emergency regional congresses aimed at rallying support for the ousting of the two National Executive members, according to some close sources of the Party, were allegedly being instigated by the Party’s flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo.”

The story also goes on to quote the National Chairman of the NPP, Mr. Paul Afoko as confirming that he was informed of the Regional Executive Committee meetings by the flagbearer, and that he, Mr. Afoko, was at a loss as to why the Regional Executive Committee meetings should be allowed to take place on the same day as the scheduled NEC meeting.

The import of this Daily Graphic report seeks to portray Nana Akufo-Addo as having sanctioned the Regional Executive Committee meetings, despite an earlier agreement with the National Chairman to hold a National Executive Committee meeting on the same day, Monday, May 25, 2015.

This impression is totally wrong, flawed, and mischievous. As a general rule, Nana Akufo-Addo does not to like to engage in media commentary on internal NPP matters, but, having regard to the importance of the issues at stake and the central role of the Daily Graphic in the Ghanaian media, it is necessary for him to set the records straight.

The facts of the matter are as follows:

On his arrival from Europe on May 22, he met in the evening with the Chairman and General Secretary of the party to review the recent, unfortunate, tragic developments that had taken place in the party. They agreed that a joint meeting of the National Executive Committee and the National Council of Elders be convened for Monday, May 25, to deliberate on them.

The next day, May 23, at the funeral in Bolgatanga of the late Adams Mahama, he took the opportunity to inform the Regional Chairmen and others about the impending National Executive Committee meeting scheduled for Monday, May 25th.

He was then informed by the Regional Chairmen that they had already scheduled a meeting of their respective Regional Executive Committees for the same Monday, May 25th, and that they therefore were requesting that on his return to Accra, he should inform the National Chairman of this and seek an adjournment of the National Executive Committee meeting.

On his return to Accra, on Saturday, May 23, he informed the National Chairman of this development, and urged the National Chairman and the General Secretary to make contact with the Regional Chairmen to sort the matter out so that the National Executive Committee meeting could take place as scheduled.

To his surprise, on Sunday May 24, he received notice that the National Chairman had cancelled the National Executive Committee meeting scheduled for Monday, May 25, without any prior reference to him.

These are the facts of the matter and it is thus clear that Nana Akufo-Addo bore no responsibility whatsoever for the convening of the Regional Executive Committee meetings. Nana Akufo-Addo wants the membership of the NPP to understand that he continues to work for understanding and unity in the party.

Kwabena Agyapong resigns as NPP Gen Sec?

0
Reports reaching TV3 news indicates that General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party, Kwabena Adjei Agyepong has resigned from the party. His said resignation letter was submitted to the leadership of the party on Tuesday May 26, 2015.

This follows several calls from the regional leadership of the party that he should resign. He and the National Chairman, Paul Afoko have been widely accused by the rank and file of the party for causing confusion in the party.

Below Kwabena Agyapong’s resignation letter

RESIGNATION AS GENERAL SECRETARY OF THE NEW PATRIOTIC PARTY

The past few days have been very tumultuous and I have taken some time to think about my political career and the fortunes of the New Patriotic Party, a party I have dedicated my life to serving. My campaign to be General Secretary of this great Party was built on togetherness and selfless service to the Party. I sought to encourage the spirit of volunteerism, which was very much alive during my days as a young patriot. Many will recall that my campaign resorted to pertinent slogans such as “Think Victory, Think Kwabena” and “Together, We Shall Rise Again.”

Indeed, when the delegates of my Party confirmed the trust they had in me at the Congress held in Tamale in April 2014, I was motivated that a day had arrived in the Party. I was confident that the general elections in 2016 will be won by the New Patriotic Party, and I still hold that conviction. I was determined to rally, together, those who supported me and those who did not support me. To that end, I organized a thanksgiving service and lunch, and invited all members in the Party. I believed that my colleagues shared the same passion for victory that I did.

I therefore hit the ground running and restructured the administration of the Party’s Headquarters. I instilled professionalism in the way we conducted our politics and encouraged our communicators to speak in a decorous manner when addressing the public. I successfully organized the most peaceful presidential primaries that our Party has seen, and under my leadership, the Party retained the best candidate to win the general elections in 2016.

I met our newly elected presidential candidate shortly after the presidential primaries and assured him of my unflinching support and commitment to the 2016 project. We shared ideas on how best to unite the Party for the imminent victory. Sadly, members of the Party have continuously sought to undermine each and every step I have taken in furtherance of the 2016 project. I have been humiliated, insulted, vilified and painted in a very unappealing light in the eyes of the public.

It is extremely heart-breaking and deterring to learn that my own colleagues take to the media to belittle the General Secretary of their own Party. I do not regret any decision I have taken since I was elected as General Secretary as all decisions have been in the interest of the Party. However, I cannot continue to serve the Party in my capacity as General Secretary.

By this statement, I hereby inform the Party and the general public that I have resigned as the General Secretary of the Party. This morning, I sent my formal resignation letter to the National Council of the Party. I, however, remain committed to serving the Party in my individual capacity as a member and it is my hope and prayer that we win the 2016 general elections to alleviate the economic hardship inflicted on Ghanaians by the incompetent and corrupt John Mahama Administration.

Thank you!

God bless the NPP. God bless Ghana.

Political violence: #OccupyGhana to work with political parties after condemning Mahama’s ‘assassination’

0
Pressure group OccupyGhana has promised to make its services available to political parties in order to stamp out violence in their activities despite its apolitical orientation.

In a statement issued on Tuesday to condemn what it describes as the assassination of Alhaji Adams Mahama, the Upper East Region Chairman of New Patriotic Party (NPP), OccupyGhana said it is committed “to engaging with and working with the leadership of all political parties and groupings to develop and sustain workable programs aimed at stamping out violence in the activities of all such groups.”

Alhaji Mahama’s death has rekindled the issue of political intolerance in the country, a phenomenon which the pressure group claims dates back to the British colonial era.

Below is the full statement:

OCCUPYGHANA CONDEMNS ASSASSINATION OF ADAMS MAHAMA

OccupyGhana has learnt with shock and indignation, the death, last Thursday 21st May, of Mr. Adams Mahama, the Upper East Region Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at the hands of some persons under clearly criminal circumstances.

We send heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathies to the family, friends and associates of Mr. Adams Mahama and call on them as well as the entirety of Ghanaians to remain calm. In times like these, calmness, more than any other virtue is the best option to exercise.

In urging calm, we also wish to express our firm belief and conviction that the Ghana Police Service is doing everything possible to bring the perpetrators of that dastardly act to justice, to vindicate the nation and get justice for Mr. Adams Mahama. We support the relevant authorities in their quest to identify all persons who are complicit in this crime and to bring them to book.

In this direction, OccupyGhana calls on all persons who may have any knowledge of the circumstances surrounding and leading to this loss of life, to step forward and pass on any such information to the appropriate authorities. No person deserves to die in the manner Mr. Adams Mahama did and no person has the right to take another’s life in the circumstances Mr. Adams Mahama’s life was taken.

The origin of the fault line of physical violence in Ghana’s politics, no doubt, can be traced to British colonialist policies and practices, under which those who demanded independence were hounded, imprisoned and sometimes, killed. We recall the brutal murder of Sgt. Adjetey and 2 others on 28th February 1948, who were doing nothing but exercising their freedom of expression and right to demonstrate. These were undemocratic practices that the colonialists could never have implemented in their home country.

Unfortunately, with the advent of independence a more vicious form of political violence was to be introduced: the phenomenon of “machoism,” feeding on the unfortunate mentality that the only way to handle political differences is to visit physical violence on one’s opponents.

We also recall with regret the violence that attended Ghana’s politics of the immediate post-independence era and its dire repercussions and consequences on national cohesion. Many were unjustifiably imprisoned, and sometimes maimed or killed; some of the wounds of that era are yet to heal.

It is unfortunate that nearly six decades after independence, we are yet to fully rid our politics of machoism. Political parties have nurtured and fed this ‘beast’ and given it room to transmogrify and mutate into a clear and present national danger, the latest form of which is the unjustified attack that has resulted in the assassination of Mr. Adams Mahama.

Occupy Ghana is fully convinced that our political parties, their members and followers have no justification to continue along a path of violence.

Occupy Ghana therefore takes this opportunity to demand of the leadership, members and supporters of all political parties in Ghana, assiduous work to eliminate and eschew all forms of violence in their intra- and inter-party engagements.

Ghana deserves politics of tolerance of divergent views in spite of vigorous contests for control and leadership at various levels of politics.

Occupy Ghana commits to engaging with and working with the leadership of all political parties and groupings to develop and sustain workable programs aimed at stamping out violence in the activities of all such groups.

For the rest of us, the death of Mr. Adams Mahama should not be seen as just another “partisan” occurrence but rather a signal that our politics is at the cusp of a trajectory of self-destruction.

We must all show a commitment to do away with all forms and manifestations of violence as a means of resolving differences. Our daily lives and work, and even politics might entail competition; but any competition that employs violence is not worth sustaining.

The death of Mr. Adams Mahama is murder, plain and simple, and ought to be treated as such. Those who seek to play politics with Mr. Adams Mahama’s death ought to know that the sensibilities of many, especially the family of the deceased are at stake.

We mourn Mr. Adams Mahama and pray that his death will be the last of such in our nation’s politics.

Yours in the Service of occupying minds for God and County.
