Kyebi: Mahama apologises over ‘galamsey headquarters’ statement

President John Dramani Mahama has rendered an unqualified apology to the people of Kyebi for describing the town as the headquarters of galamsey in the country.

President Mahama tagged Okyeman as notorious for illegal mining after he toured some sites last year.

But making a pit stop in the palace of the Paramount Chief of Abuakwa, Okyenhene Amoatia Ofori Panin II, in his tour of the Eastern Region, President Mahama said his description was as a result of what he saw while airborne last year.

“The sight was heart-throbbing,” he said, “so I made the statement because of what I saw.”

He regretted the reaction the statement generated among the people and chiefs of Okyeman and “I know it worries you,” he said in Twi.

“So, I have retracted it.

“I know the galamsey problem is a problem for us all.”
